Brown bears

BEAR ATTACKS / JAPAN TRAVEL SAFETY
Bear incidents are not evenly distributed across Japan. Start with your exact destination, current official alerts, and a plan that prioritises avoiding an encounter.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Japan records bear sightings, encounters, injuries, and occasional fatalities. A May 2026 government briefing states that fiscal 2025 had the highest number of bear-related human-injury incidents in the previous five years. Current-year figures remain provisional and change as prefectures report them.
That does not mean every visitor faces the same risk. A city stay, a busy sightseeing route, a forest road, and a remote trail require different preparation. Use the latest prefectural, park, municipality, hut, and visitor-centre information for the place and date of your trip.
WHERE RISK DIFFERS

Tsukinowaguma inhabit many mountain regions. Distribution, activity, and current warnings differ by prefecture and season.
Tokyo's mountainous western Tama area has black bears. Central Tokyo is primarily an equipment-arrangement point for travelers heading to the mountains.
BEAR ATTACKS IN HOKKAIDO
The Hokkaido Government publishes annual human-incident summaries and current brown bear warnings. Conditions can change after your itinerary is booked, so review them shortly before entering the trail—not only when planning the trip months earlier.
Because bear spray is prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage, arrange equipment and the return route inside Japan. If your itinerary includes a flight to or from Hokkaido, complete the return before airport security.
BEARS IN TOKYO
Searches for “bear attack Tokyo” often combine two different needs: checking risk in western Tokyo's mountains, and arranging bear spray in central Tokyo before traveling elsewhere. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirms that black bears live in the western Tama region and maintains a map of reported sightings and signs.
Check the official map for hiking around Okutama and other western mountain areas. Do not use the low risk of central tourist districts as a proxy for conditions at a trail several hours away.
BEFORE THE TRAIL
Review the latest park, prefecture, municipality, hut, visitor-centre, and trail information. Change the route when a closure or warning calls for it.
Travel attentively, control food and scented items, make your presence known where visibility is poor, and watch for fresh signs.
If bear spray is appropriate for your route, learn the safety mechanism and carry it in a holster. A canister inside a packed backpack is not ready.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Bear attacks are still uncommon compared with the number of people who live, travel, and hike in Japan, but they are serious and are not evenly distributed. The Ministry of the Environment publishes current provisional sightings and human-injury information, so check the destination rather than relying on a nationwide average.
Yes. Asian black bears live in the mountainous western Tama area of Tokyo. This is very different from central Tokyo's tourist and business districts. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government publishes a current sightings and signs map for mountain visitors.
Hokkaido is brown bear habitat. Risk varies by place, season, food conditions, and recent activity. Check Hokkaido Government warnings and the authority responsible for your specific park or trail before departure.
For routes in bear habitat, bear spray can be one useful last-resort layer when local guidance supports carrying it. It does not replace current alerts, encounter avoidance, food discipline, sound, route decisions, or knowing how to use the product safely.
