Reducing the chance of an encounter
- Check recent sightings, closures, and local authority guidance.
- Travel in daylight and stay on established routes.
- Talk or call out near dense vegetation, streams, bends, and low-visibility terrain.
- Watch for tracks, droppings, digging, and other fresh signs; leave if signs are recent.
- Keep food and scented items controlled, and never approach cubs or a carcass.
- Keep dogs leashed where permitted; dogs can provoke defensive behaviour.

Stop. Do not run.
Remain calm. Sudden movement can escalate the situation. Ready your spray without pointing it unnecessarily.
Create distance
If the bear is not approaching, move away slowly and quietly. Do not block its path or move toward cubs.
